Loreto High School opened in 2007 and has gone from strength to strength. Our Music Department was described as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2016 and praised for seeking to provide opportunities for all students who wish to access musical extra-curricular activities and instrumental lessons. From a very small percentage of musical involvement, there are now over 20% of pupils involved in music-making in the school on a weekly basis. We offer a wide-ranging selection of activities for our students including Jazz Band, Folk Band, Choir, Singing Group, Gospel Choir, Samba Band, Rock School for each year group, Chamber Orchestra, DJ club, Ukulele Club and Steel Pan groups for each year group as well as providing musical instrument lessons with 8 visiting specialists. The ensembles at Loreto perform regularly at school and in the wider community and enjoy sharing their talents to bring a smile to people’s faces. The Jazz Band and the Gospel Choir are regularly invited to perform in the community at prestigious venues such as Manchester Central Library, the Christmas lunchtime concert series at the Hidden Gem church in Manchester, The Heaton Mersey Youth Festival, Manchester University and Gorton Monastery. The Jazz Band and Folk Band have also performed at the Royal Northern College of Music and were invited by the Lord Mayor of Manchester to perform at the Manchester Achievement Awards. All our groups are comfortable in front of large audiences, with our big Christmas and Spring Concerts being packed full! We enjoyed performing to the crowds in the town squares of Belgium in July 2012, the Netherlands in July 2014 and Germany in 2016. With a break from touring in 2015 for our whole school musical production of Little Shop of Horrors and 2017 for High School Musical, both of which involved over 100 students and were seen by over 1000 people from our community and beyond, we are excited to be back in 2018 for this trip to Germany – we believe we have it all at Loreto and are looking forward to showing the world just how much musical talent is bubbling out of these great young people from Manchester.
